YOUTH CORNER: Christian Youth Leadership: Discipleship and Followership

Christian youth leadership is an essential aspect of the Christian faith. As young Christians, we are called to live a life of discipleship and followership, following the example of Christ in everything we do. But what does it truly mean to be a Christian youth leader? In this article, we're going to discuss what it means to be a Christian youth leader, the importance of discipleship and followership in Christian youth leadership, and how we can develop our leadership skills as young Christians.

What is Christian Youth Leadership?

Christian youth leadership is the act of influencing others positively and leading them towards Christ. As young people, we have the unique opportunity to be leaders both within and outside of our communities. Christian youth leadership is not about having a fancy title or position but about making a positive impact on others. It's about living out our faith and serving others, just like how Jesus did while He was on earth. As Christ-followers, we are called to be leaders who make a difference in the world and lead others to Christ.

The Importance of Discipleship and Followership in Christian Youth Leadership

Discipleship and followership are two essential elements of Christian youth leadership. To be a leader, we also need to be disciples and followers of Christ. The Bible says in Matthew 28:19-20, "Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you." This verse reminds us that as Christ-followers, we are called to make disciples and teach them to follow Christ.

Discipleship teaches us about Christ's teachings, how He lived His life, and how we can follow His example. It also helps us understand our gifts, passions, and calling in life. As Christian youth leaders, we need to be intentional about our discipleship journey, studying the Bible, and growing in Christ.

Followership, on the other hand, is about submitting to authority and learning from those in leadership roles. In Romans 13:1, we are reminded that "Everyone must submit to governing authorities. For all authority comes from God, and those in positions of authority have been placed there by God." As young people, we need to show respect and honor to those in leadership roles, whether it be in school, church, or our families.

When we combine discipleship and followership in our Christian youth leadership, we become better leaders who influence others positively and lead them towards Christ.

Developing Our Christian Youth Leadership Skills

So how can we develop our Christian youth leadership skills?

  1. Pray and Study the Bible: The first step to developing our leadership skills is by growing in Christ and studying His Word. We need to be intentional about our discipleship journey, spending time in prayer and studying the Bible daily.
  2. Serve Others: Christian youth leadership is about serving others. We can involve ourselves in volunteer work, such as community service or mission trips. By serving others, we learn how to lead with empathy and compassion.
  3. Take Part in Leadership Programs: There are many Christian leadership programs available for young people. Christian camps, conferences, and youth groups can also be a great place to develop our Christian youth leadership skills.
  4. Find a Mentor: Mentors play a crucial role in our leadership journey. They provide guidance, wisdom, and support. Find someone who is a strong Christian leader and willing to mentor you.
  5. Practice Followership: Part of being a leader is learning to follow. We can practice followership by learning from those in leadership positions, following their instructions, and being respectful.

Christian youth leadership is about influencing others positively and leading them towards Christ. As young people, we have a responsibility to live out our faith and serve others. By combining discipleship and followership, we become better leaders who make a positive impact on others. Developing our Christian youth leadership skills takes time, but with prayer, studying the Bible, serving others, taking part in leadership programs, finding a mentor, and practicing followership, we can grow and become strong Christian youth leaders who bring glory to God.
